The influence of television

Most of the time when we watch tv as a family, we're tuned to kid-friendly networks.  Unlike when we were kids, programming for children is readily available all of the time, cartoons not limited to just Saturday mornings.  The commercials shown on channels like this are focused around a lot of products you'd expect and probably remember from your own childhood - cereal, toys, other shows.  Every now and then there are commercials that are obviously geared toward the adults that are probably welcoming the short breaks in each show that don't feature Dora or Mickey.  I think it's interesting to hear what the kids understand about commercials, especially when Martin asks me if I want cash and tells me that I should get a low cost re-fi.

So when Sophie started telling me that she really WANTED Lelli Kelly shoes, I wondered what she was talking about and where she'd heard of them.  Later, she pointed them out to me when a commercial for the shoes appeared on tv.  They were adorable, all sparkly and girly and cute. I looked them up online and saw that they were imported from Italy and promptly declared them "UNNECESSARY for someone so small."

In a recent conversation with Sevda about Sophie's girliness and her ability to put together complete outfits, I mentioned the shoes.  And about a week later, a package arrived at our door.

Sevda.  A woman who believes in the power of advertising and granting wishes to adoring little girls.

Want a little closer look to see how sparktastic these are?

Plus, to Sophie's everloving joy, the shoes came with a tiny purse that included nail polish and a fake watch that houses lip gloss and body glitter gel.  Here she is, putting on lip gloss and adding some shine to her hair and sharing with Martin, all while singing a song about her shoes.

Side note: The rest of us were not left behind either.  Marty and I are saved from our current state of musical isolation now that we're listening to the talents of Vampire Weekend.  And Martin is now one step closer to achieving his five year-old life dream of becoming a Power Ranger.  Possibly a Ranger who wears lip gloss (see video).  And that is serious business.

Holy cow! Those are the most sparkly things I've ever seen. I'm just tickled she loves them...and honestly amazed that 'pester power' really is a viable marketing force!
