On the sill

I can't seem to keep anything green alive for very long in our house.  I just don't have enough really good sunlight or childproof surfaces available for growing.  The window sill in our kitchen is deep enough to hold a few treasures and receives morning sun.  So when Marty's Aunt Mary brought me some bulbs, this is where I placed them - for the sun and child-free location.  Check out my paperwhites, just starting to sprout up and make themselves known:

This is also the location where I place basil cuttings into pretty glass containers that used to hold drinks - Mexican mineral water, pomegranate juice, sake (from many, many years ago - back before kids when one could drink sake without thinking about how they'd feel at 6:30 in the morning when small and demanding people were ready for HOT TOAST! FROOT LOOPS! HOT CHOCOLATE! SOUP! CHICKEN NUGGETS!).  It's also the only place where it is safe to light candles without the kids blowing them out or trying to start things on fire.

It used to be just a plain old window sill, but now it is my small-spaced sanctuary.
