MacGyver, age 4

Not for the first time in my life, I wish that MacGyver were a real guy.  If he were, I'd call him up today (because if he were real, obviously I'd have his phone number) and ask for his mother's number.  I'd call his mom and have her come over so that we could chat a bit.  Because what I want to know, is when MacGyver was little, did he make stuff like this:

Martin made this for me, you can tell by my name written on the side - sure, the letters aren't in the right order and they are somewhat off-kilter, but they're all there.  And it worked, this handy dandy apple holder.  Two cardboard corners with a wire dangling off the side, all held together by a giant nail, which holds the apple firmly in place.  It WAS easier to hold my apple this way and it DID keep me from getting my hands dirty.  I can't wait until he gets a little older so I can see the kind of inventions he'll be able to make using only a Swiss Army knife and a roll of duct tape.

Editorial note: I just read this entry and I keep going back to that first sentence and it doesn't look right.  What should it be?  "I wish MacGyver were a real guy" or "was a real guy"?  That's a bad sign when I can't figure it out, right?
