I have to go

Tonight, after Sophie put her sucker in Martin's hair for the second time, he decided that it was time for him to leave home.  After some tears, he told me that he was going to move down the street to his friend Jordan's house and leave us behind.  We could come visit anytime we wanted, but he wouldn't be living here anymore.

He said, "It's a sad time, isn't it mom.  But I have to go."  Then asked me where I kept his suitcase.  I told him to look in his closet, and that I would really like him to stay for now, but that someday he could pack up and move to his own place.

"What do you mean?  Who will be my mom there?" he asked.  I wanted to tell him that lots of people feel that way when they first move out, but decided to hold that one for future use.

He went off to pack his bag, asking me to find all of his underwear.  He told me not to worry, that he would be careful without me.  "I will be gone for a long time," he told me.  "You will see."

Before he was ready to go, he said I should take a picture of him so I could remember him.  He gave me a kiss and a hug, then hauled his two suitcases and his money bag to the door.

I admit, even though at first I thought it was funny, it still hurt me a little bit, having him cry and tell me that he wanted to leave and would be fine without me.  Then, after an hour of switching tactics between reasoning, countering, offering words of love, finally I said that it was enough.  "What's it going to take to keep you here?" I asked.

"Well, Jordan could stay overnight," he said.

"He could come over for a few hours," I countered.

"Okay" he said.

I only wish that I'd started the negotiations sooner.

I'm really curious as to how Sophie was reacting to all this, sad, happy, guilty for pushing her brother to his limit?

at first she was kind of sad, wanting to go with him too. then I think it wore on her, and by the end she was pushing his bags to the door and waving goodbye. "see ya tartin!"

Do you remember the Brady Bunch episode where one of the boys wants to move out and so the mom packs her bag to go with him... *sniff*... little boys are so heartbreaking... they get me every damn time!

(but I love the idea of Sophie giving him a little help out the door!)
