And so it begins
Sevda and I used to have this rating system for guys that would designate whether or not they were worthwhile in the long run. The system was simple - was he "dockable" or not? Dockable is a general term that represents anything that required putting together, general handiness, the ability to get projects done. It included two basic factors - COULD he do the task (a. physically could he do it; b. did he have the know-how) and WOULD he do it (a. would he help; b. would he show up). The term was coined by my dad who used it to judge guys I brought home. Sure, the guy was a good athlete and spent a lot of time at our house, but mysteriously disappeared whenever it was time to put in the dock = Not Dockable. No previous dock-installation experience but willingness to learn = Mostly Dockable. Most of the guys I brought home were of the Not Dockable variety, which I learned extended past the actual dock installation and applied to most situations in life.*
In the interest of raising a boy who will be Dockable, I encourage him to hone his mechanical skills and willingness to do all things handy. At this age, it mostly means that I let him take stuff apart with screwdrivers to see what's inside. He comes from a long line of boys who like to take things apart (my dad is reported to have taken apart his brother's bike, I've been told that Marty took apart EVERYTHING in sight), and now his time begins:

*In case you're wondering, Sevda and I both married guys who have a combination of Dockable traits, but from this point forward, I'd be willing to bet that if they had to put in a dock and if our dad's weren't watching, they'd make calls and hire the right guys for the job.
Technical Note: I just don't know WHAT I'm doing in iMovie, so sorry for the poor video quality.

OK this has nothing to do with this post, but I'm at work and don't have your e-mail and just had to send you a note. On the way to work on the radio I hear Tootsie Roll. I had a smile on my face the entire ride. If any of you Ruttger girls read the comments I thought of all of you and miss you so much. What great summers we had! A shout out to Roger: "What's up baby!" Just think we would have just been wrapping up with all of our going away parties. Jennie my favorite was renting the Kareoke machine singing Liz Phair on the stoop of the Suger Shack.
Love,
Meggie

I know you are a great momma, but I am not sure you're a very smart one. What else does Martin take apart? Remind me never to sit in one of your dining room chairs - for fear Martin the Dockable Master has preceded me...

Does he also put things back together? That would be my big worry....I think I'd say broken things are better than half finished projects. NOT in the case of Martin however, because I just have a soft spot for him and think he's very, very clever.
