I'm not the only egghead

Yesterday we bought some eggs at the grocery store so that we can make Easter eggs today.  But as I faced the start of this project, I had to admit something to myself.  I don't know how to hard boil an egg.  It seems so basic.  How can I not know how to BOIL AN EGG?  So, I did what I always do when I'm faced with a cooking question I don't know.  I consulted the Food Network and my friend Kathy.  If it wasn't so early on a Saturday, I would have also called my mother and Marty's Aunt Louise.  But since it was early and the kids were occupied, leaving me at least 15 minutes to tackle this project, I decided to move forward.  After all, it is only hard-boiling eggs... how many consultants do I need?  Here's what I've found:

According to Food Network:

The best way to make easy-to-peel hard-boiled eggs with pure yellow centers is to place the eggs in a pot of cold water and add a teaspoon of salt. Place the pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Cover the pot and remove from heat and let sit for 13 minutes. Drain the eggs and immediately place in an ice bath until completely cooled. Drain and enjoy your perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs.

Variations according to Kathy:
- Add one 1. vinegar to the water. 
- Let boil for a few minutes, remove from heat and let sit for 15 minutes.

Variations according to Julia Child:
-Remove from heat once they come to a boil and let sit covered for exactly 17 minutes.

So, I'm following the Food Network instructions and Kathy's variations.  I'll let you know how they turn out.

Now, does anybody know, how long do hard-boiled eggs last?

On the table last night: Stuffed Broiled Lobster (I used tails instead of whole lobster, but it wasn't that great), The Bomb Bakers (tasty) and asparagus.

First of all, you should buy the eggs and let them sit in your refrigerator for a few days...that makes them peel easier. Then I put them in cold water in a pan and bring them to a boil. Cover and let sit ABOUT 10 minutes (unless you forget about them). Then drain, and fill the pan will cold water, drain, fill again. Let sit until you remember to put them away. Keep in ref. about 5 days...although I am sure ours have stayed longer. Well...that's my advice and I am sticking to it.

    Yea. Don't worry - I found another way that worked since you refused to tell me. Something like this - place the eggs in pan. Turn heat on. Take phone call to confirm lengthly travel reservation. Hang up, and go yell at children. Convince youngest to take bath. Run bath. Add bubble bath. Wash said child's hair. Walk down hall to get child outfit. Walk back. Think about hot water. Realize eggs? Still cooking. They turned out fine.

      I'm so glad that you found your own method. Mine have been hard to peel! I was thinking that we'd try another batch, but so far we haven't gotten around to it and now we're all sick of eggs.
