Menu, age four
Martin planned the main parts of the menu for his birthday celebrations. We started out his actual birthday with our traditional birthday breakfast - rootbeer floats:

We followed that up with pancakes and sausage because when you're four and it's your birthday, it's all sugar all the time.
For the party on Sunday, Martin said that he wanted a reuben sandwich and a cherry cake. Both kind of unusual choices for a four year-old - I don't think he's ever had a cherry cake and a reuben isn't your standard kid fare. But I aim to please, so we had Reuben and Rachael Rounds:

and cherry layer cake:

The choices were a big hit. The sandwiches were tasty and looked fancy, even though they were fairly easy to prepare (some assembly required). The cake was sweet and sugary, the frosting like marshmallow creme. Sophie REALLY loved it and at bedtime said "I love you cake" which is one of her biggest compliments, which could have only been bigger had she said "Hold me cake."
On the table - Martin's Favorites: Reuben and Rachael Rounds, Grandma Lou's Potato Salad, Grandma Jane's Baked Beans, veggies and hummus, grapes, Cherry Layer Cake with Fluffy White Frosting, assortment of bars
Note of thanks: To my momma, mother-in-law, and Marty's Aunt Louise for all bringing food and treats for the party, and to Kathy for the frosting recipe (it was delicious).

Happy birthday Martin! 4 is one of the very best ages to be.
