Almost halfway there
We're on day 6 without Marty, just about at the halfway point. Everything has been going pretty well, with the exception of ever-extending bedtimes and shorter-than-usual naptimes. Usually when I know that Marty is going to be at work over a weekend or out of town, we plan to go to my parents house for an escape and some fun. This time, they're out of town too so we're on our own.
Tonight we went to our elementary school for "family fun night". There must have been about 50 kids between the ages of 1-5 and their parents, including Martin's friend Jordan and his family. We probably should have just put those two boys in the basement and let them wrestle and try to boss each other around for all the attention they paid to the rest of the crowd.

The kids played with balls, chased each other around, crawled through tunnels, and played with a parachute. At first, Sophie buried her head into my legs and pretty much pretended that she wasn't there. After about an hour, she warmed up and started to wander around the gym playing with the other kids. She really seemed to like the parachute games, until she got trapped under the parachute and realized that I wasn't there. Then she slowly started to melt down, and we decided it was time to head out.

I'm glad that there was something planned for tonight to help us break up the next few days. It's supposed to be very cold (it was 3 degrees F when we left for the fun night tonight) for the next few days, so we probably won't be out much. I've planned some crafts (okay, cutting stuff up and letting them play in glue) and rented some movies. I bought some groceries to make a few things together. Today when Martin decided he didn't need a nap, we made a strawberry cake which he thought was fun. After Sophie woke up from her nap, we had some of the cake. It pretty much tastes like compressed cotton candy, it's actually pretty gross. So now we have an entire 9 x 13 pan of sugar to plow through over the next few days which I'm sure will only contribute to their sleep resistance movement.
And good news from Marty - so far he's doing well at the Microsoft bootcamp, he's learning a lot and has passed each of his tests so far. I'd just like to point out that this is the same guy who mocked me last weekend for being a bit of a geek. The guy who is spending two weeks surrounded by nothing but accountants and computer guys, and fits right in. My dad always said that I was a geek magnet. Obviously he was right.
On the table tonight: Blue Plate Special - meatloaf, mashed potatoes, corn, dinner roll
On the table tomorrow: Hutchinson Meatballs
On the table Sunday: Swiss Chard with Chickpeas and Couscous (because if that doesn't say "kids meal" then what does?)

We have meatloaf on deck this week too. And mac and cheese and stuffed fish fillets. It just feels like comfort food in January.
