Summer sensations

Today the kids and I went to my mom and dad's house for a short visit, catching them between vacations.  It was a beautiful summer day, heavy with the feeling that we're heading into fall.  We were only there for a few hours, but managed to swing, throw rocks in the lake, jump on the trampoline (twice), go for a walk and bike ride, feed the chickens, and have some lunch.  When we go to The Mitchell's, it's like an all-out sprint to get in all of our favorite things before our time is up.

We went out to my mom's garden to see how the vegetables were growing, and to pick anything that looked like it was almost ready to eat.  Martin was the first to take a bite out of a tomato, then another, hoping to sample each one.  Sophie picked one of the biggest ones, biting into it like an apple and with serious concentration.  I picked one for myself, took a bite, and felt like I was tasting summer.  It was ripe and juicy, warmed by the sun.  Here's what summer looks like when you're wearing it on your shirt:
