Happy Father's Day, Part I
I don't want to make anyone else feel bad, but I have the best dad there is. Not to brag or anything, but he:
1. Can make all kinds of stuff. When I was little, he made me a board game titled "Jennie, Jennie Bet Your Penny".
2. Would take us to every high school sporting event whether it was at home or away, even when we were little. When we were older, he would haul our friends along too. One time, he really kicked it down on the way home from a game and wrecked the car's transmission. We thought it was pretty funny until my mom got mad.
3. Took me on a very long bike ride from Cold Spring all the way to my grandparent's house on the Mississippi River. I remember thinking that it was pretty cool to go all that way with just the two of us. He also let me get a packet of Wacky Wafers and let me eat the whole thing.
4. Is an artist. He made a wall hanging out of a hoop and yarn when we were kids, can figure out how to make real things out of scrap lumber from the garage, and made Christmas ornaments out of felt and glue the first year my parents were married and had no money.
5. He keeps track of everything. He can tell you the dates the lake froze over and the ice went out for any year since they've lived on Long Lake. Want to know which birds appeared in their yard in any given year? Ask my dad. Want to know how many minutes he's exercised in the past 30-40 years? No problem. Is it any wonder I have an obsession with spreadsheets?
6. He drove my friend Missy and I to Madison one summer and listened to Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell the whole way. And the whole way back.
7. Sent me 13 roses for Valentine's Day one year with a card that read "I love you more than Greg does" knowing that my boyfriend in high school would send me a dozen.
8. Taught me to shoot a gun, drive a car, and made me learn how to change a tire before I could move away from home. Then signed me up for AAA in case I couldn't.
9. Encouraged me to take Italian in college then sent me to Italy my Junior year for a semester so I could use it.
10. Takes my kids on all kinds of adventures - walks, Ranger rides, fishing, biking, to rodeos and to ball games.

Jealous? No need, my dad is always willing to adopt temporary children, even if you're already an adult.
Happy Father's Day, Dad. I love you.
